Baby Oil
Baby oil and together time equates to parental bonding as the mother
spends time rubbing and massaging the back, hands, and feet.
It is a common fact that memories are most easily recalled based on
the sense of smell. Is it any wonder then that so many people recall
fond memories when they smell baby oil? The smell of baby oil reminds
them of special times with their mothers.
Baby massage is a great way to bond with your child. The gentle skin-to-skin
sensation is soothing to the baby. Infant massage helps baby fall asleep
faster, promotes healthy weight gain, and increases the baby's alertness.
The best time for a baby massage is after bath, to seal in the baby's
natural oils, or right before bed. Just a few minutes a day is all it
takes. Using baby oil for the massage will keep you baby's skin from
drying out by adding a natural barrier against moisture loss.
When massaging, use gentle strokes. Don't forget to spend time on the
hands and fingers. Talk to the baby while you work, and avoid making
sudden movements, which may startle the baby. Doing this you stimulate
all the senses of the baby and create a more intense visual and tactile
experience.
Your baby will probably want to move around. That is ok. While it is
nice to work from head to toe, it is more important for you and the
baby to remain relaxed and enjoy the experience. Remember, you are also
making memories.
